Welcome to Bush Alaska - beautiful, rugged, and expensive. We all can relate to the high prices of groceries, but not all of us can compensate for it.
The need is great. The Nome Food Bank is a lifeline for some and the only means of a healthy diet for others. From December of 2009-November 2010 the Nome Food Bank served an average of 64 families and 210 people per month with a once-a-month visit limit.
Whether providing assistance to families and individuals that might be going through a hard time, or filling in where government assistance falls short, the Nome Food Bank does whatever it can to support the community of Nome. The Nome Food Bank also provides emergency supplies to the surrounding region when the need arises.
We can't do it without your generosity. The Nome Food Bank is made possible by the support of our donors. We always appreciate any donations you can manage-cans, dry goods or financial gifts. Please check our "Acceptable Food Items" and "Most Commonly Requested Items" lists as well as our "Business Tax Deduction" information before making a donation.
Acceptable Food Items: Shelf stable products that have not reached expiration, fresh produce and frozen foods, dairy and juice, excess inventory from promotions or events (unopened), seasonal-merchandise, and national or private label produce.
We Cannot Accept: Product that has been thawed, product removed from its original packaging, re-packed, products past their expiration date, damaged or opened products.
Most Commonly Requested Items: Canned meats and fish, cereal or oatmeal, powdered or canned milk, sugar, flour, nutritious beverages, coffee, bread, and easy meal items.
How do I donate? Please call the Community Center Office at 443-5259 or the food bank directly during open hours (Tuesday and Thursday 5:30pm-7:00pm) at 443-2588.
Business Tax Deduction: The Food Bank of Alaska provides a receipt for all donations. The 1976 Tax Reform Act allows businesses to deduct costs associated with donating food to nonprofit organizations such as Food Bank of Alaska. Visit the IRS website for more information on tax deductions for charitable contributions. (www.irs.gov)
Do you want to volunteer? If you find yourself wanting to give back, or just want to do a little something extra with your time that is valuable and meaningful, join our team! Volunteers at the food bank inventory food, verify eligibility, assist clients, and distribute food according to family needs. Training will be provided. If you are interested in volunteering please call the Community Center 443-5259.
